"Microcosms" is an intimate journey into these worlds; this body of intimate paintings are fully realized ideas in a small format which serves to concentrate the ideas contained within. Indeed, Fournier has often remarked that these smaller works take longer to complete than some of his large scale canvases, as the layering of translucent washes morphs and evolves over time, revealing new permutations of his original vision. Most are deep sea blue or green with a few reds, creating a depth of field evocative of the magic realists and surrealists of days before such as Max Ernst and Odilon Redon. With these paintings, Fournier takes us on a surrealistic journey into the unknown, yet a world with which Fournier is hauntingly familiar. - Miriam Shiell COVER: BLUE WORLD IMAGE (detail), 2014 acrylic on canvas, 10 x 8 in.
