b'Jean-Paul Riopelle: Sur le packJean-Paul Riopelle (19232002) was a Canadian painter from Quebec. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Ecole de Meuble, where his instructor was Paul Emile Borduas, one of the Les Automatistes, an offshoot of Surrealism. Riopelle travelled to Paris in 1947 where he had a brief association with the Paris Surrealist movement: his first solo exhibition took place at Galerie La Dragonne in 1949. Riopelle is known for his Abstract Expressionist non-representational paintings which allude to landscape painting.In 1967, Riopelle, along with Joan Mitchell (19251992) traveled to Vtheuil, France, where the impressionist painter Claude Monet lived from 1878 -1881. Monet was a significant influence on both the artists artwork, in that his paintings although representing nature appeared to be abstract. This painting will be part of a major exhibition on Jean Paul Riopelle by National Gallery of Canada is organizing, in partnership with the Fondation Riopelle, October 27, 2023 to April 7, 2024. The exhibition is being presented on the occasion of the celebration of the centenary of Riopelles birth (19232002) and is guest-curated by Dr. Sylvie Lacerte.'
