Jack Bush (19091977) was one of the founding members of the Painters Eleven group and also one of the few Canadians of his generation to have a successful international careerperhaps in part by his long-lasting friendship with the influential critic Clement Greenberg whom he met in 1957. Bushs work is characterised by the artists intuitive use of surface handling and colour. Bridge Passage is part of a series of works completed in 1975 that allude to musical notation. Musicparticularly jazzhad a major influence on the artist. The lavender ground in Bridge Passage serves as a backdrop to the bold strips of colour, using the coloured bars as notes to create a fresh dynamic movement and rhythm to the work."
